# Getting Started

> Base URLs, keys, and finding models.

#### Is Nito a model, or a gateway?

A gateway in front of many models; you choose the model per request. See [How the API Works](/api/get-started/how-nito-works).

#### How do I make my first call?

Create a key in the [developer console](https://app.trynito.ai/api), then send a chat request to `https://app.trynito.ai/v1/chat/completions`, or point the OpenAI SDK at `https://app.trynito.ai/v1`. See the [Quickstart](/api/get-started/quickstart-60-seconds).

#### Which base URL do I use?

`https://app.trynito.ai`. The OpenAI-compatible routes live under `/v1/...` and the gateway-native routes under `/api/v1/...`. For chat they behave the same.

#### How do I find available models?

Call `GET /v1/models` without authentication. It returns the public catalog; inference access depends on your account. The catalog is synced from providers and changes over time, so the live list is authoritative. See [Model List](/models/all-models).

#### Is the API free to try?

API access is prepaid. An API key needs a subscription or a prepaid balance; the Free plan's allowances apply to the Browser App and the Plugin. See [Plans](/plans).
