# Backups and Sync

> Encrypted backups, live sync across devices, and Storage settings.

Your chats, settings, memories, and Workbench content live in your browser, encrypted. **Encrypted backup** creates a restore point; **Encrypted sync** keeps every signed-in browser and device up to date. Both are under **Settings > Storage**.

Encryption happens in your browser. Nito stores only encrypted objects and never receives your backup password or sync passphrase.

## Encrypted Backups

Included with **Plus**, **Advanced**, and **Max**.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a backup">
    Choose **Create encrypted backup** and set a password of at least 12 characters. Nito cannot recover it; without it the backup cannot be restored.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Restore">
    Choose **Restore encrypted backup**, pick a restore point and a mode, and enter the password.

    * **Merge** adds the backup's data to what is already in this browser.
    * **Replace and restore** removes the data covered by the backup first. It cannot be undone.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A backup covers chats, settings, memories, and Workbench content. Attached file bodies are not included; restored chats keep the attachment details, not the file contents.

## Encrypted Sync

Included with **Advanced** and **Max**.

1. Turn on **Enable encrypted sync**.
2. Set a passphrase of at least 12 characters. Nito cannot reset it.
3. Choose whether to **Remember this browser**, which unlocks sync without asking again. Signing out, disabling sync, or **Forget this browser** removes that access.
4. Choose **Unlock and sync**. Sync then runs automatically; **Sync now** runs it on demand and **Lock sync** pauses it.

Sync carries the same set as a backup. Deleting a chat in one browser removes it from the others on the next run.

## After a Downgrade

Backups stay downloadable and restorable, and sync switches to download only (**Unlock and download**, **Download latest**). New backups and uploads resume when a qualifying plan is active again. A prepaid API balance does not unlock either.

## Storage Settings

* **Browser storage** shows how much of the browser's quota Nito uses.
* **Persist storage** asks the browser to keep local data under storage pressure.
* **Purge chat data** deletes local chats, projects, and Workbench data. Saved attestation evidence and the local decryption key go with it. Signing out alone removes none of this.
