# Chat Basics

> The composer, Classic and Incognito chats, the rail, replies, and shortcuts.

## The Composer

The footer holds three controls.

* **+ menu.** Files, the **Tools** control for Web Search and Web Fetch, **Library** and **Active Context**, and, on narrow layouts, **Enhance prompt**.
* **Model control.** The model, its privacy level, and the reasoning effort. Click it to open the picker.
* **Send.** Becomes **Stop** while a reply streams. Enter sends, Shift+Enter adds a line (swap them in Settings).

Type `/` to insert a saved Prompt or `@` to mention a Knowledge entry. Paste an image or document to attach it. See [Files and Images](/web-app/files-and-images).

## Classic and Incognito Chats

**+ New** starts a chat; its split menu offers both kinds.

| | Classic chat | Incognito chat |
| :- | :- | :- |
| Saved | Yes, encrypted in this browser | No. Refreshing or closing erases it |
| Where it appears | **All chats** or a folder | The **Incognito (not saved)** slot at the top of the rail |
| Search, share, summarize | Yes | No |
| Shortcut | ⌘⇧O or Ctrl+Shift+O | ⌘⌥⇧O or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+O |

**Start new chats as incognito** in Settings makes Incognito the default. Whether a chat is saved is separate from the privacy level of its requests; see [Privacy in the App](/web-app/privacy-in-the-app).

A new chat resets the composer: draft, Fusion, web tools, persona, knowledge, and model return to their defaults. A reply still streaming in the previous chat finishes in the background.

## The Rail

* **Folders** group chats. Drag a chat onto a folder, or use **Move to folder**. Deleting a folder returns its chats to **All chats**.
* **Pin** floats a chat to the top. Drag rows or use **Move up** and **Move down** for a manual order.
* **Rename**, **Share**, and **Delete** are in the row menu. Delete is permanent for this browser.
* **Search** matches titles, message text, and summaries. Enter opens the first result.
* On desktop, drag the rail edge to resize or collapse it. On phones it is a slide-in drawer.

The browser keeps up to 100 conversations for local search. Titles come from the first message, capped at 56 characters.

## Replies

Every reply has a copy button and a **Receipt**. Reply actions:

* **Regenerate reply** and **Fork chat** (copies the conversation up to that point into a new chat).
* **Copy reply** and **Copy with receipt** (appends model, privacy level, and token counts).
* **Share reply** and **Share proof digest** on attested replies. See [Receipts and Proof](/web-app/receipts-and-proof).
* **Tune Persona** turns feedback on a reply into durable preferences for the active persona.
* **Delete reply**, in two clicks.

Your own messages offer **Copy submitted prompt** and **Edit submitted prompt**. After an edit, Enter regenerates or forks; choose in Settings under **Enter after edit**.

While a reply streams the view follows it only when you are near the bottom; otherwise **Jump to latest** appears. Long chats on wide screens show a prompt navigator on the right edge.

## Toolbar Actions

**Edit** (rename), **Summarize**, **Download**, **Share**, and **Delete**.

* **Summarize** sends the transcript to your summary model (set in Settings; **Current chat model** uses the active route, including Encrypted). On Advanced and Max, **Add to Knowledge** follows. Incognito chats cannot be summarized to Knowledge.
* **Download** writes a Markdown file with front matter.
* **Share** creates a browser-encrypted copy; the key lives in the link fragment. See [Sharing](/web-app/sharing).

Long saved chats are compacted automatically: older turns are summarized to fit the context window, and a banner shows how many messages were archived.

## Keyboard Shortcuts

⌘K (Ctrl+K) opens the command palette. Sequence shortcuts are pressed one key after another.

| Action | Shortcut |
