The Tools control in the composer’s + menu switches Web search and Web fetch for the current conversation.

Web Search and Web Fetch

  • Web search pulls fresh results from the open web into the answer.
  • Web fetch reads URLs you paste into the prompt.
New chats start with both on. The setting is stored per conversation. Chats saved before the control existed stay off until you turn them on. Search runs in auto mode: the gateway searches when a prompt needs it and skips it when the answer is already in the conversation or an attached document. An instruction to browse, fact-check, or look something up forces a search; “do not search” wins. Fetch runs only on a real http or https URL. Local or private hosts and URLs carrying credentials are blocked.

On the Reply

When search or fetch contributed, the reply shows a collapsed Web Citations panel with the sources. When the gateway skipped web context, a collapsed Web Context status says why. While a reply streams, a one-line status such as “Searching…” shows the step in progress. Search queries, the search provider, and the routing decision stay private; only sources and a generic status reach the page.

Model Support

The Tools control appears only when the selected model supports web tools. Fusion forwards only the tools every selected model supports.

Encrypted Routes

On an Encrypted model, Web Search and Web Fetch stay selectable when the catalog advertises them. The browser prepares the web context through a helper before the request is encrypted, so the encrypted request carries no live tool call. If the helper fails, the reply says so and you can retry.
